The Magic of the Alpujarras: From Ham to Handwoven Rugs

Driving from Villa Bugambilla in Almuñécar into the Alpujarras is a journey you won’t forget. The road winds through the mountains, past small villages and olive groves. The views make you want to stop every few minutes. And no worries, the drive is easy and safe, perfect even for those who are not used to mountain roads. Honestly, just the journey is amazing, and that’s before the villages even come into view.

Órgiva for a Breakfast Stop to Remember

We made a quick stop in Órgiva for breakfast, and what a pleasant surprise was that. Cozy cafés, fresh bread, and strong coffee set the perfect tone for the day. The town has a relaxed vibe, narrow streets full of life. Locals chatting, and travelers like us just soaking it all in. It was the ideal place to stretch our legs before tackling the winding roads up to Trevélez, about an hour from there.

Trevélez: Spain’s Highest Ham Village

Trevélez is Spain’s highest village, nestled high in the Sierra Nevada at 1,400 meters. Even in June you can see the last snow fighting the sun on the highest peaks. The air here is crisp and dry, which is a perfect condition for curing ham. Step into any shop, and you will be greeted by rows of jamón hanging from hooks, aging gracefully.

The Jamón de Trevélez is mild, slightly sweet, and melts in your mouth. These hams are not rushed, some even cure for over 18 months. Tasting a slice here really makes you appreciate the patience and care that goes into this centuries-old tradition.

A tip from our visit: park in the middle of the village and wander slowly through the whitewashed streets. And if you get hungry, grab a plate of ham at one of the restaurants, it will be exactly what you dream of when you think of Trevélez.

Pampaneira: Color Around Every Corner

Heading down back to the valley you can make a stop at Pampaneira, a village that feels like a completely different world. Where Trevélez smells of ham and mountain air, Pampaneira bursts with color. It’s famous for its jarapas, handwoven rugs made from recycled fabric scraps.

Every rug is unique. Walking through the streets, you can hear the looms clicking and see generations of artisans keeping their craft alive. Picking one up isn’t just a souvenir, it is taking home a piece of Andalusian soul. Just be aware you will probably need an extra suitcase to fly back home, but it is worth it every penny.

Parking just outside the center and exploring on foot is the way to go.

Pampaneira’s colors feel like a mirror of the journey itself, it is lively, surprising, and endlessly captivating.

A Route You Will Remember Forever and Possibly Will Go There More Than Once!

The Alpujarras can not be fully captured in words. You need to experience it! Breathing the fresh mountain air in Trevélez, feeling the fibers of a jarapa in Pampaneira, and being constantly overwhelmed by the scenery along the way.

Driving from Villa Bugambilla in Almuñécar, this is more than a day trip. It’s a collection of moments, flavors, and colorful memories. By the time you head home, maybe with a slice of ham in your belly and a rug in the trunk, you will realize you haven’t only seen the Alpujarras, you will carry it in your heart forever with you.

If you’re in Almuñécar, don’t hesitate to plan this day trip. I promise, you won’t regret it. Andalusia has never looked more beautiful.
