Some places simply have a different atmosphere. Almuñécar is one of them. Instead of busy resorts and endless high-rise hotels, you’ll find an authentic Andalusian town where locals still gather in the squares, complimentary tapas come with your drink, and life moves at a relaxed pace. That’s exactly why we fell in love with it.
Almuñécar
Families gather outside until late in the evening, children play safely on the plazas, and many restaurants are still filled with Spanish families rather than tourists. It gives Almuñécar a relaxed atmosphere that is becoming increasingly rare along the Mediterranean coast.
Thanks to its location between Málaga and Granada, Almuñécar is an ideal base for exploring Andalusia. Within an hour you can visit the Alhambra, hike in the Sierra Nevada, or simply spend the day discovering one of the many hidden beaches along the Costa Tropical.
In addition to the beach, there is a lot of history to discover, and the area around Almuñécar offers many beautiful routes for road biking, driving, or motorcycling. There are also plenty of hiking trails.
With more than 17 kilometers of coastline, Almuñécar has beaches for every type of traveler. Whether you prefer quiet coves or lively promenades, you’ll find it all here.
Costa Tropical
The Costa Tropical attracts most of its tourists from within Spain, often from Madrid, Jaen, Zaragoza or Granada, as these cities get too hot during the summer. One thing is certain, where Spaniards go, it’s friendly, laid-back and the food is always great. Although English isn’t spoken everywhere, that’s part of the charm. Most restaurants and cafés are still aimed at Spanish visitors, giving you the chance to experience authentic Andalusian hospitality. The people here are hospitable and will make sure you do not lack a thing. So don’t worry about the language, everybody manages well here.
Almuñécar is located just under an hour’s drive from Málaga, heading east. Compared with well-known destinations such as Marbella and Torremolinos, Almuñécar has managed to keep a much more relaxed and authentic atmosphere.
To the north is within a 50-minute drive the beautiful city of Granada with the Alhambra, a nice shopping mall and the route to the famous ski resorts in the Sierra Nevada.
Of course, Almuñécar can be busy during the high season, but it’s less frantic and much more relaxed. The beaches may look crowded, but there’s always plenty of space and sunbeds are easily available throughout the day.
There are two large parking garages along the beach, where you’re immediately on the promenade.
