Kayaking along the Cliffs of Maro – Cerro Gordo
If you’re looking for an unforgettable outdoor activity during your stay in Almuñécar, kayaking along the spectacular cliffs of Maro-Cerro Gordo should definitely be on your list. We booked a guided tour from nearby La Herradura and honestly didn’t expect it to be one of the highlights of our holiday.
As soon as you leave the beach behind, the scenery changes completely. The busy coastline disappears and you’re surrounded by towering cliffs, hidden coves and crystal-clear water. It’s hard to believe that you’re only a few minutes away from the lively promenade of La Herradura.
The tour takes you through the protected Maro-Cerro Gordo Natural Area, one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline on the Costa Tropical. Along the way you’ll paddle past impressive rock formations and small sea caves that can only be reached from the water. The guides know the area well and stop regularly to tell you more about the landscape and marine life.
One of the highlights is reaching the small waterfall hidden between the cliffs. During spring and after periods of rain, the waterfall is at its most spectacular, but even in summer, when only a small stream flows down the rocks, it’s still a magical place to stop.
Can anyone do this tour?
Yes! That’s one of the reasons we enjoyed it so much. You don’t need any kayaking experience. Before setting off, the guides explain the basics and help everyone feel comfortable on the water. Families with children regularly join the tours as well.
The pace is relaxed, with plenty of opportunities to stop for photos, swim or simply enjoy the scenery.

Whether you’re an experienced diver or have always wanted to try your first dive, Almuñécar offers excellent conditions for all levels. The water is often surprisingly clear, allowing you to discover colourful fish, octopuses, sea stars, moray eels and, if you’re lucky, even seahorses.

Almuñécar and its surroundings offer countless beautiful hiking trails, many starting near the city center. No car is needed to get to the trails of these walks. Platforms like Wikiloc make it easy to find the perfect route for you, some of them start near Villa Bugambilla!
Explore Andalusia’s Natural Parks
One of the favourites is the Río Verde trail near Otívar. This scenic walk follows the river through a lush valley with crystal-clear pools and waterfalls. On warm days, it’s the perfect place to cool off with a refreshing swim. If you’re looking for a more challenging hike, the nearby Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park offers countless mountain trails with breathtaking views.
Another gem is Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo, a natural park previously mentioned for kayaking. The N340 route through this park, from Maro to La Herradura, is a must-see,whether by car or on foot.
