Panoramic view of Almuñécar in September on Spain's Costa Tropical

Why September is the Best Time to Visit Almuñécar

Everyone has heard of Spain in July and August, but if you ask us, September is the best month to be in Almuñecar. The month when the town starts to settle back into the normal everyday rhythm.

The Mediterranean Sea has been warming up all summer, the beaches become quieter, and the town returns to a more relaxed atmosphere. The days are still sunny, outdoor dining continues well into the evening, and you will discover why so many people fall in love with the Costa Tropical at this time of year.

The sea is warmer than you might expect

One of the our biggest surprises as first-time visitors years ago, was the sea temperature.

Although the hottest summer days are over, the Mediterranean has collected months of sunshine. Swimming in September is often even more comfortable than in early summer, making it perfect for long beach days.

Sunny days without the intense summer heat

September usually brings blue skies and temperatures around 27–30°C. Although daytime temperatures are often similar to midsummer, the lower humidity makes it feel much more comfortable.

It’s the perfect weather for relaxing by the pool, walking through the old town or enjoying lunch on a sunny terrace on the beach.

Our favourite place on the beach. The second row offers shade throughout the day while you still enjoy the beautiful sea view.

Almuñécar returns to everyday Spanish life

After the summer holidays, everyday life slowly returns.

Children go back to school, streets become less busy and cafés fill with residents catching up over coffee.

Another reason we enjoy September is the return of the weekly market. During August, the market takes a break. The annual Feria certainly plays a role, but August is also the hottest and busiest month of the year. By September, the market is back, the temperatures are more comfortable.

For us, this is when Almuñécar feels most like itself.

Perfect weather for exploring the Costa Tropical

September is ideal for discovering more than just the beach.

Take a day trip to Granada, Malaga, visit the white villages of the Alpujarras, explore Nerja and Frigliana, enjoy a scenic coastal walk or spend a morning kayaking before relaxing by the pool in the afternoon.

Visit one of the local markets around Almuñécar. Just keep in mind that all markets start at 09.00 AM and close at 14.00 PM.

Enjoying the September evenings

One of the best things about September are the evenings.

Enjoy dinner outdoors, take a walk along the promenade where the summer stalls are still open or simply sit on your terrace with a glass of wine or Tinto de Verano while listening to the sounds of a warm Andalusian evening. For us, that’s one of the best things about this time of year.

As the nights become a little cooler, many guests enjoy sleeping with the patio doors open instead of using the air conditioning. Waking up to birds singing and the neighbourhood slowly coming to life is one of our favourite September moments.
