If you are staying on the Costa Tropical and you want to do something completely different than beaches and seaside towns, Soportújar will be a perfect surprise! This tiny whitewashed village is high in the Alpujarra mountains, just a little over an hour drive from Almuñécar.
Soportújar is also named “the Village of Witches” . The idea comes to life on every corner with dragons, broomsticks, monsters, street art and viewpoints over deep green valleys.
For travellers looking for authentic Andalusia with a twist, Soportújar is unforgettable.
Where the Witch Legend Comes From
The nickname is not a modern invention. After the Moorish population was expelled in the 16th century, new residents from the north of Spain were resettled in Soportújar. They brought their own traditions and superstitions. Neighbouring villages began joking, sometimes accusing, that the town was full of witches. The rumour never disappeared. Instead of running from the legend, the villagers decided to embrace it.
In recent years, Soportújar has filled its streets with fantasy-inspired sculptures and strange houses that turn a simple walk into a little adventure. It is never frightening, it is humorous and full of personality. Like a fairytale come to life.

What to See
The first thing many visitors notice is the Dragon Cave: a colourful dragon’s mouth that you literally walk through. In the centre of the town the Witch’s House stands out with its creepy dolls, pumpkins and broomsticks. Closeby, the Witch Fountain has become one of the most photographed spots in the village.
Hidden details pop up everywhere: witches on rooftops, owls watching from balconies, cats carved into stone, so exploring slowly is part of the fun. On the edge of the village you’ll find a real Tibetan Buddhist temple, looking out over the mountains.
Soportújar is a peaceful, unexpected and beautiful ‘pueblo’ to sit down, breathe in mountain air and take in the silence. When you’re ready for a break, small cafés serve simple local traditional dishes from the Alpujarra.

A Different Side of Andalusia
A visit to Soportújar feels refreshing after the beach. The mountain breeze is cooler, the streets are quiet and the views reach across valleys and stone-built villages.
Many guests combine Soportújar with a visit to Pampaneira, Bubión, Trevelez or Capileira—four stunning Alpujarra villages just a short drive away from Villa Bugambilla, each filled with artisan shops, traditional architecture and picture-perfect squares.

How to Get There
From Villa Bugambilla Almuñécar, the drive takes a little over an hour. The road goes gently through the mountains, passing olive groves, chestnut forests and small farming villages. Parking is easy, and once you’re there, the entire village can be explored on foot. Mornings and late afternoons are ideal, especially in summer, when the mountain air is cooler than the coast.

Plan Your Stay
One of the best things about this region is contrast. In a single holiday you can enjoy warm beaches, colourful coastal towns and peaceful mountain villages that feel a world away. Soportújar is small, strange, charming and completely different from anywhere else in Andalusia… and that’s exactly why our guests love it.
